Safety & Policies
The safety of our residence halls is of the utmost importance to Residence Life & Housing. Each hall has a variety of safety measures in place to protect residents, including card access, door alarms, video surveillance, as well as fire safety devices.
However, it is important for residents to remember that safety and security of the residence halls begins with each individual who resides on campus:
- It is the responsibility of the students to ensure they carry their eCard and room key at all times to access their residence hall. If loss of theft of their keys or eCard occur, it should be reported to Residence Life Staff and/or University Police.
- It is the responsibility of the students to lock their doors when they leave their room, or when they are sleeping. Thefts can occur when rooms are left open or unlocked, please protect your property by always locking your door. Students should immediately report any thefts to University Police and Residence Life Staff.
- It is the responsibility of the students to ensure that windows are locked, especially in residence halls where rooms are located on the ground floor.
- It is the responsibility of the students to ensure that they do not allow strangers into the residence halls. Each students is responsible for scanning their eCard at the building entrance, anyone not in possession of an eCard, or not a resident of that building must be checked in by a current resident, registered at the front desk, and escorted throughout the building.
- It is the responsibility of the students to be alert and aware of their surroundings, inside the residence hall and when they are walking on campus. Avoid using distracting technology, including smart phones, or anything that will decrease your awareness.
- It is the responsibility of the students to be familiar with and utilize the emergency resources available to them, in order to keep them safe on campus. Review the Campus Map for the locations of all Campus Emergency Phones (marked with a red star).
- It is the responsibility of the students to always let someone know where they are going, on or off campus. When possible, let someone know when you plan to arrive at your destination, and let them know that you arrived safely.
