Politics and Government Minor
Government and politics impact our lives in numerous ways from laws to the economy and our rights as citizens. A minor in Politics and Government allows students to become more engaged citizens and allows them to have a greater understanding of current issues impacting their lives.
Students that select the politics and government minor work in both the public and private sectors. Many students find that this minor provides a solid basis for future study in graduate school. A minor in political science is a valuable compliment to other majors and makes a student a more attractive job candidate.
Minor in Politics & Government
The Politics & Government Minor includes a total of 18 credit hours (6 classes) consisting of Principles of Political Science (POLS 111) and American Government (POLS 120) plus four political science electives at the 200 level or higher including two classes at the 300 or 400 level.
A Politics & Government Minor provides a competitive career advantage for majors in the following fields
- Business Administration - Government and business are connected through contracts and regulations. Understanding how government works gives the business person a competitive advantage.
- Criminal Justice - Knowledge of laws and government procedures are integral to the smooth working of the justice system.
- Social Work - Social workers work with local, state and federal programs under governmental regulations and are integral in providing services to the public.
- History - Government and politics are integral to understanding events in a more complete context.
- Economics - Government actions impact economies around the world and are important to understanding economic models.
- Computer Science/Security - National security and other governmental agencies are a major employer of graduates in this field. Knowledge of how government works will provide a competitive advantage.
- Communications - A politics & government minor allows graduates to work as campaign managers and as reporters covering local, state and federal government and politics.
- Public Health - A politics & government minor prepares graduates to work with federal agenics such as the Center for Disease Control, the National Institute of Health as well as public health agencies at the state and local level.
- Biology/Chemistry - A politics & government minor prepares graduates to work with agencies such as the Food & Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency as well as state and local agencies.
