In the hallways of the academy as in the common alleys of everyday life, the library as a social institution remains linked to the collections it accumulates and service it provides. Academic libraries provide access to well selected and continually reviewed and updated accumulation of materials that anticipate current and future information needs of the academy. They aim to be as representative of the literature and thinking of each campus discipline as the library provides support for the curriculum and student, faculty, and staff research. Kemp Library has a primary collection of over 559,000 books, serial back files and government documents in print, over 1.4 million microforms, some 3058 e-book titles, and subscribes to over seventy databases that provide access to the contents of more than 28,000 periodicals. These support teaching, learning, research, staff and administrative activities, and community development and engagement.
The library also boasts of other specialized collections such as the contents of its Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) that support training of teacher candidates. The Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection (ACMJC) is a valuable asset that preserves the legacy of the famous jazz musician whose name it honors and is used by faculty, students, and many jazz musicians and enthusiasts in the region. Aspiring to achieve recognition as a premier national and international venue for jazz research, the ACMJC continues rigorous collection activity and organizes a yearly “Library Alive” Concert Series in collaboration with the Delaware Water Gap Celebration of the Arts (COTA) and the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, and an ESU Jazz Synergy Series. The Vintage Radio Collection is a valuable collection of 3000 hours of radio programs from the 1930s through the 1950s. The university has dispersed throughout its buildings wonderful works of art that constitute a valuable collection yet to be inventoried and cataloged. On the horizon is a science museum. These collections offer teaching and learning opportunities for ESU faculty and students and connections to the wider community.
