Our campus employs 53 Resident Advisors (RA) in traditional, suite-style and at the University Apartments. Additionally, 7 RAs are employed at the University Ridge ( The RA role is one of the most challenging and rewarding student leadership positions available on campus. Our RAs make a significant impact on the lives of the students living on campus RAs create a community on their floors, by offering a variety of programs to help students learn about themselves and others. RAs encourage students to make good choices, experience diversity first hand and grow from challenges.

Many employers recognize the RA position on resumes and have a vast understanding of the demands placed on students in this position. It is not uncommon for graduates to report that the training and experiences they received as RAs have been crucial to their career success.

We encourage you to carefully review the Resident Advisor Job Description, Discussion Questions and the RA Quiz before applying for the resident advisor position. Please ensure you fully understand and are comfortable with the demands of the position prior to applying. The department also employs two Head Resident Advisors to work in the suite-style housing. A Head Resident Assistant must serve as a Resident Advisor for a minimum of three semesters, prior to applying.

Traditional, Suite-style & the University Apartment Application Process: This application is available on the ESU Employment Site when applications are being accepted (typically in October). Please check the website frequently to apply when the application process is open. Each candidate must complete three references, one of which should be a current residence life staff member. University Ridge Application Process: This application process is a separate process from the traditional residence halls, suites, and University Apartments. ESU students who are interested in becoming an RA at the Ridge can submit an application for the following academic year at the start each spring semester in January. Applications will be available in the Ridge office and online at Any eligible student who submits an application for the Ridge RA position will be considered for one of the 7 RA positions. Each candidate will be required to go through two rounds of interviews and meet with other members of the Ridge staff.
