Residence Hall living is considered an integral part of a student's overall educational and personal development. The Residence Life Program is dedicated to providing an environment that supports the classroom experience and contributes to the overall growth of the student. In this group living environment, established practices and policies complement the student's educational and social needs, provide safety and health standards, and promote the overall educational objectives of the University.
A detailed listing of all Residence Hall policies is contained in the Residence Life Information and Policies Booklet, which you will receive when you check into your assigned hall in the Fall, but the following highlights may prove to be of immediate benefit:
Roommates
Most residence hall assignments are mailed in late July. Transfers are assigned housing based upon availability, and on a first-come, first-served basis. Some freshmen may be assigned to extended housing due to housing demand. Some of the assignments will be converted to a standard double room assignment following the first few weeks of school, while others may remain for as long as the entire fall semester. Shawnee Hall will have three students to a room on a permanent basis. Any roommate preference indicated on your housing agreement will be accommodated whenever possible, but only in cases when both students have requested each other on their forms, by the noted deadline and where space permits. Each student is encouraged to communicate with his/her roommate(s) before arriving to get acquainted and to coordinate who is bringing specific items (this eliminates the problem of having two stereos, two refrigerators, etc.).
Furnishings
Each room is provided with single beds, dressers, desks, desk chairs, and a standard modular telephone jack. The rooms may be personalized with furniture from home but keep in mind the space is limited and must be shared with another person(s).No University provided furniture may be removed from the room.
Students who are interested in having a micro-fridge unit delivered directly to their room and picked up at the end of the year should contact Campus Specialties. Campus Specialties provides rental units at a reasonable cost with delivery, pick-up, and a 24-hour Service Hotline. Campus Specialties also offers Safe Rentals for students who are looking for additional security for some of their personal belongings. Both of these services can be ordered via the Campus Specialties web site (www.campusspec.com).
Facilities
All of our residence halls (except University Apts.) have communal kitchen, laundry, recreation and study areas, and TV rooms.
Supervision
The residence halls are supervised by an Assistant Director of Residence Life and Housing, a Resident Director or a Graduate Assistant. These professionals are assisted by Resident Advisors (RAs) who are upperclass student para-professionals employed by the Office of Residence Life. Each floor has an RA, and it is his/her responsibility to provide social programs, enforce University policies, act as a resource and referral agent, and generally assist with academic and social programs within the limits of his/her experience and training.
Cable TV and Internet
Cable TV and Internet service is provided at no additional charge through the University's Computing and Communication Services department. There are over
75 channels provided, as well as a Residence Life movie channel, which features 12 new movies each month. Cable internet and wireless internet service is available in every room.
Mail
Mail is delivered (Monday-Friday) by the US Postal Service to each residence hall. The mail is then distributed to your assigned mailbox in the hall. Your mailbox number is the same as your room number.
Use the following EXAMPLE for your mailing address;
Jane Doe
Room 524, Hawthorn Hall
East Stroudsburg University

The campus is also serviced by private package companies for deliveries only. (UPS, Federal Express, DHL, etc.)
Telephones
There is a phone jack in every room, but you must provide your own touch-tone telephone along with the connecting cord. Local and 1-800 calls can be made
free of charge with your access code supplied by Computing and Communication Services. Long distance calls from this land line can be made using a calling card. If you do not supply your room with a local phone, the Residence Life and Housing department will need your mobile phone number for emergencies and calls related to residence hall business.
Smoking
All Residence Halls are COMPLETELY SMOKE-FREE! Smoking is prohibited within 20 feet of any main entrance for all campus buildings.
