SHIPPENSBURG - Freshmen Katie D'Ambrosia and Jamie Ferrigno advanced to the semifinals in women's doubles to highlight the weekend for East Stroudsburg University at the 2007 PSAC Tennis Championships held at Shippensburg.
D'Ambrosia and Ferrigno beat Kristen Herman and Jackie Kramer of Shippensburg 8-1 in the first round, and then took out the No. 3 seed from Bloomsburg in the second round. The Warriors' freshman duo beat the Huskies' Katie Hasyn and Tracy Nissenbaum 8-4 to advance to the semifinals on Sunday.
In the semifinals, D'Ambrosia and Ferrigno pushed the No. 2 seed from California (Olga Alekseeva and Lisa Santoro) before falling 8-6. Cal went on to win the women's doubles championship 8-6 over the No. 1 seed from Slippery Rock.
In the women's singles draw, Shana Morris advanced by default in the first round and fell 6-4, 6-1 to No. 5 seed Andriana Nunic of IUP in the second round. Mandie Rutt dropped her first round match 6-0, 6-1 to Caitlin Heston, also of IUP.
Kyle Doebler had the top performance for the ESU men, taking No. 2 seed Ryan Chow of Bloomsburg to a tiebreaker before falling 6-1, 4-6 (10-6). Jeff Kurz moved to the second round by default and lost 6-0, 6-1 to Lukas Labitsch of Kutztown, and Jared Howat lost 6-1, 6-2 to Drew Slocum of Millersville.
Kurz and Howat walked into the second round of the men's doubles draw by default and fell 8-1 to the No. 2 seed from Bloomsburg (Ryan Chow and Dan Gal).
