PSAC release
EAST STROUDSBURG - Freshman Katie D'Ambrosia was named Rookie of the Year and head coach Al McCormick was named Coach of the Year to give East Stroudsburg University two of the three PSAC East women's tennis awards, which were released Wednesday.
D'Ambrosia (Broomall/Marple Newtown) is the first ESU player to earn Rookie of the Year honors since it was established in 1993 and was voted to the All-PSAC East team in both singles and doubles. She is also the first ESU women's player to be named to the all-conference team since the team championship era began in 2001.
D'Ambrosia was 13-8 in singles and 17-8 in doubles as a freshman. She went 4-1 in PSAC matches and 9-7 overall at second singles, and was 12-7 in dual matches. ESU won its final six matches of the season to finish with a 10-9 record.
Freshman Jamie Ferrigno (West Grove/Avon Grove) and D'Ambrosia compiled a 15-7 record at second doubles, including a 3-1 mark against conference competition, to earn All-PSAC honors.
Last fall, the pair advanced to the semifinals of the PSAC championships at Shippensburg and also won two matches at the ITA East Regional at Bloomsburg before playing together throughout the spring season, when they put together an 8-4 record in dual matches.
McCormick was named Coach of the Year for the second time in his career at ESU after being recognized by the PSAC men's coaches in 2004. He is the only tennis coach in school history to earn the award since its inception in 1989.
McCormick is a 1977 graduate of ESU and helped the Warriors to three straight PSAC titles during his playing career.
