EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University will send 10 swimmers to the 2006 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships this week at Clarion.
The 2006 PSAC Swimming Championships begin on Wednesday, February 15th and continue through Saturday, February 18th. The swimming action will get under way on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. with the 1,000 yard freestyle and continues with two sessions of multiple events on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The morning sessions begin at 10 a.m. and the evening sessions start at 6 p.m.
ESU head coach Lisa Pizzuto, thinks her team has a chance of breaking a lot of school records this week. "I'm hoping for the best times of the season coming out of this meet just as long as the swimmers stay healthy and swim well."
The Warriors have compiled a 5-2 record in dual meets this season. The team won three dual meets in January and captured eight of 15 first place finishes at the ESU Invitational on February 5th in its last competition.
Sophomore, Kimberly Jones (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) qualified in four events, the 50 and 100 freestyle and the 200 and 400 IM. She will look to improve upon her 15th-place finish in the 100 freestyle and 17th-place finish in the 50 freestyle last year. Jones won the 50 freestyle against Bloomsburg and the 200 IM at Mansfield this season. She also won the 100 freestyle twice at home against University of Scranton and Lock Haven.
Juniors Jackie Muller (Warminster, Pa./St. Hubert) and Julie Steele (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) are top returning swimmers after finishing 12th and 18th respectively last year at the PSAC Championships. Muller swam a 55.53 in the 100 freestyle and Steele swam a 2:20.38 in the 200 butterfly. Muller will again compete in the 100 freestyle and Steele will compete in the 100 butterfly as well as other events. Steele won the 200 butterfly in 2:21.01 at IUP this season
After a record-breaking season freshman Sally Kaminski (Edwardsville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) qualified for her first PSAC championship in three events the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle. She swam a 1:57.53 in the 200 to set school and pool records and a 53.84 in the 100 for a new school record against C.W. Post. Kaminski also won the 100 and 200 at IUP, the 50 and 200 against Lock Haven and the 50 freestyle at Mansfield.
Seniors Justine Kenia (Andover, N.J./Lenape Valley) qualified in the 400 IM and Marlo Smurda (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) in the 400 IM and 200 freestyle. It will be the first trip to the PSAC Championships for Kenia, while Smurda returns as a league qualifier for the fourth time in the 400 IM. Kenia finished third in the 400 IM at Mansfield this season. Smurda won the 50 freestyle against Bloomsburg, the 100 butterfly at Mansfield and the 400 IM at IUP this season.
Juniors Justine Grilz (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Bishop Hoban), Corinne Harbold (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle), Jess Chong (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and Tori Bayliff (Schuykill Haven, Pa./Pottsville) qualified in the 200 and 500 freestyle, the 200 breast stroke, the 100 freestyle and the 50 freestyle respectively. Grilz won the 200 freestyle in 2:02.60 and the 500 freestyle in 5:30.07 and Harbold won the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.4 against University of Scranton this season.
Chong won the 100 freestyle at Mansfield earlier this season. Chong and Bayliff both qualified for the Championships at the ESU Invite when Chong swan the 100 freestyle in 56.59 and Bayliff swam the 50 freestyle in 25.91.
"If we swim well, everything takes care of itself," Pizzuto said.
The Warriors finished 10th at last years PSAC championships.
