SHIPPENSBURG - California University's Stephanie Elk hit a solo home run for the lone run of the game as the Vulcans beat East Stroudsburg University, 1-0, Saturday morning in the NCAA Mid Atlantic Regionals at Robb Field.

The Vulcans improved to 26-16 and were scheduled to play at 4 p.m. against the winner of the Millersville-Lock Haven game.

ESU, which set the school record for wins in a season, ended its season at 27-27 and earned the respect of all eight teams at the regional as well as the fans and media with its gritty play.

The Warriors lost both of their games by one run and will graduate just one senior, Ashley Miller, who missed graduation and played a huge part in the team's success.

Becky Mezyk, a lefty, was the winning pitcher, allowing just two hits. Mezyk threw a five-inning no-hitter in Cal's win over North Carolina Central on Friday and was just as solid on Saturday. She struck out five and walked none and fielded her position well, including making a great play on a Miller chopper in the seventh inning.

California, which has been in the regionals in 16 out of the last 17 years and was the No. 5 seed, scored the only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Elk hit the first offering over the fence in left field.

The home run ruined a great outing by Kristen Halvorsen. Halvorsen scattered seven hits, struck out two and walked none.

The Warriors had runners on base in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Jennifer Veronesi led off the game with a single but was forced out when California turned a double play.

Veronesi led off the fourth with a double, her 11th of the season, and took second on a bunt by Jessica Schmoyer. Two ground outs though ended the inning and kept the game scoreless.

In the fifth, Eliza Morosco reached on an error to open the inning but was forced out at second when Candice Pastor hit a short fly to right field. Two strikeouts ended the inning and set up Elk's heroics.
