SHIPPENSBURG - Shippensburg University's Chantal Gross singled in a run with no outs in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Red Raiders beat East Stroudsburg University, 3-2, Friday in the winner's bracket of the NCAA Division II Mid Atlantic Regional at Robb Field.
Kelly Nelson singled up the middle to open the inning and Ali Morris was hit by a pitch. Head coach Jamie Brown replaced starting pitcher Crissy Wontroba with Kristen Halvorsen. Halvorsen hit Katie Heatley to load the bases. Gross then singled to the left side to score Nelson with the winning run, ending the 2:35 contest.
ESU is now 27-26 and will play California Saturday at 10 a.m. The loser of the game will be eliminated. Shippensburg, 42-18, will play Bloomsburg at 4 p.m. Bloomsburg beat Lock Haven 3-0.
Wontroba was outstanding in her second start in as many days. She allowed just eight hits and struck out four in 10-plus innings of work. She allowed three earned runs and walked three.
Wontroba had great defense behind her. Third baseman Candice Pastor, who had a double and a single, made eight outs herself, including a diving grab of a bunt. The Warriors nearly turned a double play when shortstop Jennifer Veronesi tossed to Shannon Dietrich at second. Dietrich's throw appeared to complete the double play to Lindsey Kost at first but the umpire ruled Kost pulled her foot.
ESU, the No. 6 seed, out hit No. 2 seeded Shippensburg 10-9 and had four extra base hits. Each team left 11 runners on base.
The Warriors had a runner on base in the eighth and 10th innings but could not push across a run. In the 11th, Pastor and Ali Hale singled with one out but a flyout and a groundout ended the inning.
Shippensburg scored its first run in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Ali Morris singled to left. A ground out to the pitcher moved Morris to second. Gross followed with a single between right fielder Ashley Miller and Dietrich, allowing Morris to score. The team that has scored first has won every game of the tournament.
ESU went ahead in the top of the fourth. Miller beat out an infield single to open the inning and went to second on a sacrifice from Dietrich. Catcher Eliza Morosco then drilled the first of her two doubles into the gap in left-center, her 11th and 12th doubles of the season, to plate Miller. Kost then doubled off the base of the fence to score Morosco and chase starting pitcher Dani Shields. It was the 10th double of the season for Kost.
The Warriors threatened in the top of the fifth. With one out, Jessica Schmoyer bunted for a single and Miller beat out another infield single. Dietrich fouled out near the fence by third base and both runners hustled to move up a base but a ground out ended the inning.
Shippensburg tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rachelle Wedell walked to open the inning, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Kelly Nelson.
In the other first round Friday games, Bloomsburg beat California 5-1 and Lock Haven beat North Carolina Central, 8-4.
Millersville beat Kutztown 3-1 to eliminate Kutztown while California ended North Carolina Central's season with a five-inning 9-0 win. Cal pitcher Becky Mezyk threw a no-hitter.
