KUTZTOWN - Kristen Halvorsen threw a four-hit shutout and Jess Schmoyer drove in three runs, including a two-run homer, to lead East Stroudsburg University to a 4-0 win over Shippensburg in the first game of the NCAA Division II Softball Mid-Atlantic Regional on Thursday morning.
Halvorsen recorded her eighth shutout of the season, extending her school record, and the 11th of her career for the Warriors, the No. 4 seed in the tournament. She faced just 24 batters over seven innings and struck out seven.
Schmoyer, a native of Kutztown and a graduate of Kutztown High School, jumped on the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the first and drove it over the fence in right-center to give ESU a 2-0 lead. Jen Veronesi was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning for the Warriors, and Schmoyer followed with her first home run of the season.
The sophomore left fielder was at it again in the second, as she singled to center with two outs to score Eliza Morosco from second. Candice Pastor doubled to the gap in right center to bring Schmoyer all the way around from first and give the Warriors a 4-0 advantage.
Halvorsen did the rest of the work for ESU in the circle, as Shippensburg failed to advance a runner past second base in the contest. The Lady Raiders' most serious threat came in the fifth, when Lisamarie Ramagli led off with a double, but the runner was erased when Sarah Stengl grounded out to third and ESU first baseman Ali Hale threw back across the diamond to cut down pinch runner Kiley Abersold, who was tagged out by Veronesi.
