EAST STROUDSBURG - The East Stroudsburg University softball team qualified for the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 1981 with a 2-1 win over Bloomsburg in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Senior Crissy Wontroba, pitching in the 100th game of her career for the Warriors, went the distance in the circle, holding the Huskies to four hits and striking out five. Wontroba improved to 13-8 on the season with the victory.
Candice Pastor put ESU on the board with a solo home run to lead off the third inning. The Warriors extended their lead to 2-0 with an unearned run in the fourth, as Kara Darcey crossed the plate following an error by the first baseman which would have ended the inning.
Wontroba allowed just two hits through the first five innings before Alyssa English hit a solo homer with one out in the sixth. A two-out single in the seventh gave Bloomsburg its final chance to tie the game, but Wontroba induced a pop out to shortstop Jen Veronesi to secure the win.
Ashley Lynn threw a four-hit shutout in the opening game, and the Huskies offense provided a pair of runs in the second inning for a 2-0 victory. Kristen Halvorsen allowed just four hits for ESU while taking the loss.
ESU just missed the PSAC Tournament in 2006 but qualified for the NCAA Regionals at Shippensburg. The Warriors beat Kutztown 2-1, then lost 3-2 to the hosts in 11 innings and fell 1-0 to California.
The 2007 PSAC Softball Tournament will be held at Kutztown beginning on Thursday and continuing through Saturday.
