EAST STROUDSBURG - Senior Ashley Miller went out with a bang in her final home game as the East Stroudsburg University softball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division doubleheader with Shippensburg and tied the school record for wins, Friday at Zimbar Field.

Miller was honored in a pregame ceremony as the lone senior and then sparked the Warriors to a 3-0 win in the second game with a home run. Shippensburg won the opener 1-0.

The Warriors are now 26-23 overall and 10-12 in the PSAC East, tying the school record for wins set by the 1988 squad. They will close their regular season at Bloomsburg tomorrow at noon.

ESU is ranked 5 in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the latest NCAA poll. Lock Haven is No. 1, followed by Kutztown, Bloomsburg and Shippensburg. The top eight teams qualify for NCAA regionals which begin May 11.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game when Lindsey Kost singled in Jennifer Veronesi. Veronesi walked to open the inning and went to second on a bunt by Jessica Schmoyer.

Miller added an insurance run in the third with her solo hot, her second of the season. Veronesi accounted for the final run with her eighth home run of the season, a solo blast in the fifth.

Kristen Halvorsen threw her first shutout of the season and improved to 6-6. She allowed just three hits and struck out four.

In the first game, Shippensburg scored in the first inning off a double and held ESU to one hit. Kelley Tiesi was the winning pitcher, striking out 13.

Veronesi had the lone hit in the first game with a single to go two for five on the day. Crissy Wontroba had nine strikeouts but fell to 15-12 with a complete-game eight hitter.
