KUTZTOWN - East Stroudsburg University's run in the NCAA Division II Softball Mid-Atlantic Regional ended Sunday afternoon at Kutztown, as the Warriors fell 2-1 to Bloomsburg after defeating Edinboro 4-2 in a game that was suspended due to darkness on Saturday and resumed at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

The Warriors finish the season as the third-place team in the Mid-Atlantic Region and also made the third NCAA regional and PSAC tournament appearances in school history. ESU's 29 wins on the season are a new school record, surpassing the previous standard set during a 25-4 season in 1977, when the Warriors placed second in the EAIAW regional championship.

The winner of the eight NCAA Division II regionals across the country will advance to the College Softball World Series in Akron, Ohio next week. Lock Haven and Bloomsburg will play for right to represent the Mid-Atlantic Region on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and Monday at noon, if necessary.

The story of win over Edinboro was sophomore Jess Schmoyer (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown), who drove in two runs with a double in the second inning on Saturday to give ESU a 3-1 lead when play was halted, and then hit the first pitch she saw on Sunday over the fence in center field for her second home run of the regional. Schmoyer, who entered the regional with no home runs and 10 RBI on the season, was 7-for-13 with two homers and nine RBI in five games over the weekend.

Junior pitcher Kristen Halvorsen earned her third win of the regional for ESU. She went all seven innings and pitched around 10 hits to allow just two runs, both on solo home runs in the first and seventh innings.

Against Bloomsburg, ESU knocked Huskies ace Ashley Lynn from the game after she pitched to just seven batters, but Sheelin Fisher limited the Warriors to just one hit in 5 2/3 innings in relief to improve to 11-3 on the season.

Halvorsen threw her fourth complete game of the regional for ESU and allowed just a pair of unearned runs in the contest. Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Alyssa English, but ESU came back with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. Jen Veronesi drew a walk to lead off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Schmoyer and scored on a single by Eliza Morosco.

Bloomsburg went ahead 2-1 in the third on an RBI single by English, which came after a walk, a fielders choice and a throwing error put runners on first and third with no outs. Halvorsen got out of the inning with no further damage, but that was all Fisher and the Huskies would need to advance to face Lock Haven.

Veronesi managed the only ESU hit off of Fisher, an infield single in the bottom of the third. The hit was the 200th of her career, making her the first Warrior to reach that milestone in the 33-year history of the softball program. Veronesi will also leave with career school records for home runs, RBI, runs scored and stolen bases.
