PSAC release
EAST STROUDSBURG - Lynne Elphick has been named the PSAC Lacrosse Coach of the Year and four players were selected to the all-conference team after helping East Stroudsburg University to a school record-tying 11 victories during the 2008 season.
Senior defender Janelle Cronmiller (Hilltown/Pennridge) is a member of the All-PSAC first team and freshman Christine Bradley (Pottstown/Pottstown), senior Katie Fretz (Parkerford/Owen J. Roberts) and senior Renee Maniscalco (Collegeville/Spring-Ford) were all named to the second team.
Elphick led the Warriors to an 11-7 record, an eight-win improvement from the 2007 season, and an 8-6 record in the PSAC to secure a conference tournament appearance in her third year at ESU.
She helped turn around a program that had won five games over the previous two seasons, including a 3-12 mark a year ago. Five of the Warriors' seven losses this season came against West Chester and Lock Haven, which were ranked in the top 10 in Division II throughout the year.
Cronmiller, a member of the second team last year, finished the season ranked third in the country with 4.6 ground balls per game and sixth with 2.1 caused turnovers per game. She led a defense that was fourth in the conference with 11.3 goals against per game, an improvement of nearly five goals per game from the previous year.
Maniscalco is the only member of this year's All-PSAC squad to earn the honor four straight seasons after being named to the second team offense. She was a member of the first team defense as a sophomore and junior and was on the second team as a freshman.
ESU's top all-around player during her four years, Maniscalco led the Warriors in points (50) and assists (16) and was second on the team with 34 goals. She also had a team-high 46 draw controls, was tied for second with 19 caused turnovers and fourth with 44 ground balls. Maniscalco is fifth in school history with 49 career assists and is one of 12 players with 100 career goals, finishing with 111.
Fretz also reached the 100-goal plateau this year and led the Warriors in goals in each of the last three years. She matched her career-high with 37 goals this season and also added eight assists, and was second team All-PSAC as a sophomore. Fretz scored 118 goals during her career to rank eighth in school history, and had 21 career hat tricks.
Bradley started all 18 games in the midfield as a freshman and was named to the second team defense. She had 19 caused turnovers and 45 ground balls, and also contributed 16 goals and eight assists on the offensive end. Her top game came in a 12-9 win over Millersville, as she had three goals and two assists to help ESU to an important PSAC win late in the season.
