PHILADELPHIA - Maryellen Onofre scored her 1,000th career point as the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team beat University of the Sciences, 75-58, Wednesday in a non-conference contest at the Bobby Morgan Arena.
Onofre entered her senior season with 900 points and scored nine against Sciences to reach the milestone. All nine of her points came on three-pointers and she has 1,003 for her career. She is the 11th player in ESU history to reach the milestone and the first since Niki Cox did it in 2005.
Alyssa Antolick made nine of 15 field goal attempts and all four of her free throws and led the Warriors with 22 points. She also had six rebounds and a steal. Jhazmin Brown finished with 11 points, an assist and steal while Onofre had nine points, two rebounds and an assist.
DeAnna Rayam added eight points and two assists for ESU which is now 8-1. Monika Fogelsanger had seven points and Jackie Yandrisevits six. Amy Jones added five points, Sheila Gallaher four and Melanie Villano three.
The Warriors forced 19 turnovers and held University of the Sciences to 39% shooting for the game (20 of 51).
ESU, playing for the first time since December 20, fell behind early, 12-4 with 13:45 left in the first half. Brown hit a bucket, Rayam made a free throw, Antolick used the glass for a pair and Rayam scored on a layup to get the Warriors within one, 12-11, with less than 11 minutes left to play.
Sciences extended its lead to five 23-18, with five minutes left to play Fogelsanger sunk a jumper, then converted a three-point play, Brown scored on a layup and Yandrisevits followed her own miss to make it 30-27 Sciences at halftime.
Antolick and Brown each had six first-half points while Fogelsanger had five and Rayam and Gallagher four each.
Onofre hit a three early in the second half for her first points of the game and Villano knocked in another from long range to tie the game at 33 with two minutes spent in the second half.
Sciences went back ahead by four but Rayam scored on a layup and Brown did the same following a Yandrisevits steal. Jones made a free throw and Antolick rebounded the miss of the second and made a three-point play for a 44-41 lead with 13 minutes left in the contest.
The lead grew to eight as Brown made two free throws, Jones scored in the paint, Rayam made a free throw and Brown scored again to make it 57-49 with four minutes remaining.
Onofre hit her second three a minute later to extend the advantage to 10, 62-52 and the Warriors pulled away late as Yandrisevits made a pair of free throws, Antolick scored twice on layups to beat the pressure and Onofre hit her second and third baskets on the way to the win.
ESU will travel for a pair of weekend games against the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. Saturday, the Warriors play at Clarion then head to IUP Sunday. Both games begin at 1 p.m.
