EAST STROUDSBURG - Maryellen Onofre made a short jumper with two seconds left to lead the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team to a 65-64 victory over Kutztown University, Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern division play. The win gave ESU the PSAC East title, its first outright title since 1995.
Kutztown made two free throws to take a one-point lead but Onofre brought the ball up court, went around a pick by Monika Fogelsanger and hit a jumper with 1.7 seconds left. Following a Kutztown timeout, the Golden Bears failed to in bound the ball and took another time out. They got the ball in but did not have a good shot.
ESU, picked to finish last in a preseason vote of coaches, improved to 9-3 in league play and won its first PSAC East title since 1996 when it was shared with Bloomsburg and Kutztown. According to one PSAC official, it was the first time a team picked seventh had won its division.
ESU is 16-11 overall and will be the top-seed in the East when the playoffs begin Tuesday at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors' opponent will not be determined until the rest of the league games are played tomorrow.
This is the sixth title for ESU since the PSAC began with an Eastern Division in 1983.
Onofre scored a game-high 18 points, making two three-pointers and all six of her free throws. Monika Fogelsanger added 17 points and six rebounds while Jackie Yandrisevits had 16 points.
ESU opened up an early 11-point lead when Yandrisevits made a free throw for an 18-7 lead with 13:38 left in the game. The lead grew to 20 five minutes later when Fogelsanger scored in the paint for a 29-9 lead with eight minutes left. Kutztown got within 13 at halftime, 40-27.
The Warriors extended the lead back to 16 when Onofre drilled a jumper for a 47-31 lead with 15 minutes left in the game.
The Golden Bears already clinched a playoff berth and could have won the league title with a win. They closed the gap to single digits with five and a half minutes left. Kutztown took its first lead since early in the game when Tricia McElmoyle made two free throws for a 64-63 advantage with 36 seconds left.
ESU missed a jumper and had a foul at the other end but McElmoyle missed a free throw and Fogelsanger grabbed the rebound to set up Onofre's heroics.
