MANSFIELD - Maryellen Onofre hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with 10 seconds left as the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team earned a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoff berth with a thrilling 70-69 victory over Mansfield, Wednesday at Decker Gymnasium.
Onofre swished her three from near NBA range and Mansfield missed a three at the end of the game as the Warriors earned a playoff spot for the first time since 1996
ESU is now 8-3, atop the league standings, and swept the season series with the Mounties. The Warriors close their regular season Friday at 6 p.m. at Koehler Fieldhouse against Kutztown with a chance to win the PSAC East. Kutztown fell to second place at 7-4 following a 69-56 loss to Millersville.
The PSAC playoffs begin Tuesday.
Onofre, a graduate of nearby Athens High School, finished with 18 points, including four three-pointers. Jackie Yandrisevits scored a game-high 22, one shy of her career high. Amy Jones added 13 points and eight rebounds while Jasmine Gittens had six points and three assists.
Mansfield, which needed a win to clinch its first-ever playoff berth, was 13 of 24 from three-point range.
Mansfield led by a pair at halftime and held on to the lead early in the second half. ESU went ahead five minutes into the second half on a pair of free throws from Yandrisevits to make it 45-44. Mansfield went back ahead and held a four-point lead, 57-53, when ESU called a timeout with 6:13 remaining in the game.
ESU went back ahead when Monika Fogelsanger scored off a Sheila Gallagher pass and Onofre hit a three from the top of the key but the Mounties hit another three to make it 60-58 with four minutes left.
Another three and a jumper put Mansfield ahead by five but Gallagher hit a three and Fogelsanger a free throw to tie the game at 62 with two minutes left.
Mansfield made two free throws and Yandrisevits, who a minute earlier was helped off the court with an arm injury, returned and hit a jumper. Following a three-pointer, Yandrisevits nailed a three of her own, from the top of the key, to tie the game at 67.
The Warriors got off to a great start, using an 8-0 run to open the contest. Yandrisevits and Onofre each had four points early on. Mansfield used a 7-0 run to get within one but Gittens used the glass for a pair, Onofre hit a three, Gittens scored on a drive and Yandrisevits had a three-point play for an 18-7 lead with 14:02 left in the first half.
The Mounties tied the game at 27 with four minutes to play but Jones had a three-point play and Gittens shrugged off contact for a lay-up for a 32-17 advantage with two minutes left. Mansfield hit two more of its nine first-half three-pointers and took a 37-35 lead at halftime.
