EAST STROUDSBURG - Fourteen different players scored as the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team beat Alderson-Broaddus 72-35, Saturday night to win the 42nd annual Panaia-Soloway Rotary Pocono Classic at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Maryellen Onofre led the Warriors with 11 points as the Warriors captured the tournament crown for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
Onofre was named the tournament most valuable player and was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Amy Jones and DeAnna Rayam. Caitlyn Brown from Alderson Broaddus and Molloy's Kymira Woodberry and Randi Bender rounded out the team.
ESU ran its record to 6-0 by jumping out to a 43-18 lead at halftime. ESU shot 40.6% for the game, forced 40 turnovers and went deep into its bench.
Keri Cahill scored eight points for the Warriors while Monika Fogelsanger and Melanie Villano each had seven. Shannon Ellis, Alexa Detzi, Sheila Gallagher and Brittany Lacey all had six points. Jones, Gallagher and Kristi Streightiff each grabbed three rebounds while Ellis and Cahill each had three steals. Lacey had four.
The Warriors started strong and led by eight three minutes into the game as Villano and Onofre hit baskets, including a three from each.
Alyssa Antolick drained a jumper eight minutes into the game to extend the lead to 15 at 20-5. The lead grew to 23 on an Ellis layup and was 25 at intermission, 43-18.
In the consolation game, Molloy College forced 21 turnovers and shot 54 percent from the field to beat Concordia, 89-58. Kelly Quackenbush led Molloy with 17 points while Bender added 15, E.J. Dreyer 13 and Clarissa Jones 12. Danielle McLaughlin paced Concordia with 17 points, 15 of which came on three-pointers while Danielle Bacon made three of six three-pointers and finished with 14.
ESU is now 6-0 and idle until Dec. 19 when they play at Edinboro at 5:30 p.m.
