BETHLEHEM - East Stroudsburg University won eight matches but all 10 wrestlers were eliminated from medal contention at the 102nd Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships, Saturday at Stabler Arena.
ESU was 11th in the team race following four rounds of wrestling. Wrestling will continue Sunday with the championship finals and the consolation place bouts.
Lehigh, in search of its fifth straight EIWA team title, had five wrestlers advance to the finals and was in first place with 104 points. Cornell, also with five finalists, was second with 100.5 followed by Penn and its three finalists. Harvard also has three finalists and is fourth. American has two finalists and Navy one.
The tournament will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday with the consolation semifinals, followed by the consolation place bouts. The finals will begin at 3 p.m.
The Warriors' Kyle Ferris and Dave Sullivan each won two matches but all 10 wrestlers saw there season come to and end with two losses in front of nearly 3,000 people.
Ferris, a sophomore, wasted no time in his first round match against Whitt Dunning of Army. Ferris scored a takedown nine seconds into the match and had a takedown with 23 seconds left in the second period for a 4-0 lead. He escaped in the third and had a 1:29 riding time advantage for a 6-0 victory. Ferris lost in the quarterfinals to Cory Cooperman, a two-time All-American from Lehigh, 12-3.
Ferris won his second match of the day in the consolation bracket. He had a takedown in the first, an escape in the second and riding time for a 4-1 win over Chris Kelly of Franklin & Marshall.
Ferris, the No. 8 seed, saw his season come to an end in the consolation quarterfinals. Cesar Grajales, the No. 5 seed from Penn, had a takedown in the first, rode out Ferris in the second and added three more points, plus riding time, for a 6-0 victory. Ferris ends his season 12-8.
Freshman Dave Sullivan picked up the second ESU win in the first round with an 8-2 decision over Matthew Gevelinger of Brown at 174. Sullivan fell behind early but had a reversal to tie the match after the first period. Sullivan chose down to start the second and escaped nine seconds in. He added a takedown later in the period for a 5-2 lead after five minutes. Gevelinger chose neutral to start the third and Sullivan took him down and added a point of riding time to move into the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Matt Herrington of Penn had takedowns in each period in a 12-4 major decision.
Sullivan moved into the consolation quarterfinals with a 7-3 decision over Harvard's Wesley Walker. Sullivan led 3-0 early, received a pair of back points and added a third period takedown.
Sullivan battled all the way to the end but could not get a late takedown and lost to Army senior Chad Marzec 4-3 in the consolation quarterfinals. Sullivan ends his season 25-17. The 25 wins are a team high.
In the quarterfinals, ESU freshman Nate Nauroth led 1-0 early but Cornell's Michael Mormile, a two-time NCAA qualifier, rode out Nauroth in the second and had a reversal in the third on the way to a 7-4 decision. Nauroth stayed alive with a 4-2 decision over Daniel Appello of Brown but his freshman season came to an end when he was pinned by Frankie Baughn of Army in the third period. Nauroth ends his season 22-13.
Patrick Simpson, the No. 2 seed from Army had two takedowns and three back points in the first period on the way to a 17-5 win over ESU's Chris Sullivan. Sullivan came back an hour later and racked up 25 points on the way to a 25-12 major decision over Danny Scotton of Princeton. Sullivan led 13-8 after two periods and used three back points and three takedowns for the major decision.
Sullivan's season came to an end in the second round of consolations when Harvard's Rob Latessa pinned him in 2:25.
ESU's Keith Smith had a first round bye and 165 and lost a major decision to Troy Letters of Lehigh, 10-2. Letters is a three-time EIWA champ and had a takedown in each period to move onto the semifinals. Smith came out strong in his first consolation, jumping out to a 6-0 lead against Dustin Tillman of Columbia and winning 8-0.
Smith, one of three seniors, fought to a scoreless first period and had a pair of escapes and a penalty point but fell to Brian Rowan of Army, 6-3 in the consolation quarterfinals. Smith ended the season with a 23-11 mark and his career at 73-54.
Dave Williams of ESU also drew a top-seed, Josh Glenn of American in the first round. Williams had a first period reversal but Glenn pinned him in the second period. Williams needed just 47 second to pin Matt DeNichilo of Princeton in the quarterfinals. Williams had a takedown 12 seconds in before earning the fall.
Williams' season came to an end in the consolations where he lost to Jon Kane of Navy, 10-4. Williams ends his freshman season 9-16.
Matt Swallow opened with a tough 3-1 loss to No. 4 seed William Simpson of Army. Simpson escaped early to start the second period and Swallow tied the match when Simpson was called for stalling. Simpson scored the winning point with a stalling call against Swallow with 20 seconds left in the match and added a point for riding time.
In the consolations, Swallow was tied at zero with Jeff Schell of Brown but Brown scored an escape and a takedown in the final two minutes for a 4-0 decision. Swallow ends his red-shirt freshman season with a 16-18 mark.
ESU's Mark Smith had one of the toughest draws in the tournament. He opened with Dustin Manotti of Cornell, a three-time All-America and the No. 1 seed at 157. Manotti had three first-period takedowns and went on to a 13-4 victory. In the consolations, Smith wrestled Derek Zinck of Lehigh, his high school teammate at Upper Perkiomen High School and the No. 2 seed. Zinck had three first-period takedowns and beat Smith 12-4. Smith ends his four-year career with a record of 99-42.
Sean Rinaldi, the top-seed from Cornell at 197, had a first period takedown and a reversal and takedown in the second and beat ESU's Sean McCracken, 14-6. McCracken tried for a late takedown but could not get it and lost to Leo Saniuk of Brown 4-1 in the consolation round.
ESU heavyweight Adam Karasevicz trailed by a point after the first period and lost to Columbia's William Beechum, 9-2 in the first round. In the consolation bracket, Army's Michael Sprigg had three takedowns and won 7-2. Karasevicz ends his season 14-15 and his career 26-30.
