EAST STROUDSBURG - Six East Stroudsburg wrestlers advanced to the second consolation round of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships this evening.
The event is being held at Koehler Field House on the campus of East Stroudsburg University. The second session of the tournament begins at 5:30p.m. this evening.
Cornell built a solid lead in the team score with 65 points going into this evening's session. Lehigh, Penn and Navy are battling for second place with 48, 47.5 and 47 points, respectively.
For ESU, unseeded John Stout upset the #8 seed, Jeff Schell of Brown 5-3 in the opening round at 133 to advance to the quarter finals against defending NCAA champion Matt Valenti of Penn. Valenti won that bout 17-4, sending Stout to the consolations this evening, where he will face Jordan Lipp of American tonight.
Scott Heckman, seeded #8 in the tournament at 149, won by major decision over Eric Marcotulli of Princeton in the first round, and was defeated 11-4 by #1 seed Jordan Leen of Cornell in the quarter finals. Heckman will wrestle Jack Conroy of Bucknell tonight.
At 165, Leif Ruschmeyer won by injury default over Brian Rowan of Army, and 11-3 to #3 seed Steve Anceravage of Cornell in the quarter finals. Ruschmeyer draws Matt Pletcher of Rutgers this evening.
Sean Carr lost his first bout at 141, 5-3 to #4 seed Matt Kyler of Army, and advances to the next round of consolations with a bye. He'll face the #3 seed, Brad Canterbury of Navy this evening.
Shane Mallory, 174, also drew a bye to reach the second round of consolations against the #6 seed, Brent Smith of Army. Mallory lost his opening bout by a 20-5 technical fall against #4 seed Matt Herrington of Penn.
Heavyweight Charles Deighton lost 5-2 to #1 seed Ed Prendergast of Navy, and advanced to the second round of consolations on a bye. He'll face #7 seed Nico Somers of Franklin & Marshall next.
Steve Gambino lost 10-0 to #4 seed Fernando Martinez of Army at 125, and 11-3 to Jacob Bucha of Franklin & Marshall.
Ben Bishop was pinned in 6:50 by Drake Hovis of Cornell at 157 and again by Chris Norrell of Rutgers in 3:38 of the consolations.
At 184, Dave Williams lost a heartbreaker by 6-5 to George Mann of Bucknell before being pinned in 6:57 by Keith Dobish of Rutgers.
Cornell sends eight men to the semi finals this evening, followed by Lehigh and Penn with six each.
In the biggest upset of the tournament, Harvard's Max Meltzer, seeded #1 at 141, was pinned in 3:22 by unseeded Kyle Borshoff of American in the opening round of action.
