BLOOMSBURG -- East Stroudsburg University junior Scott Heckman won the 149 pound Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title and led the Warriors to a fifth place finish at the 64th Annual PSAC Wrestling Championships, Saturday at Nelson Fieldhouse.
Edinboro University once again captured the title with 147.5 points, followed by Bloomsburg (119), Lock Haven (111.5), and Clarion (79). The Warriors finished fifth tallying 57 points.
Heckman, wrestling at 149 pounds, downed Bloomsburg's Matt Moley, currently ranked 21st in the nation to pick up the title. The 8-4 sudden victory decision enabled Heckman to pick up ESU's only fourth individual title in the last 16 years. En route to the championship, Heckman first beat Edinboro's Joel Webster 13-9, and followed with a 9-5 decision of Division II Nationally ranked Chris Chambers of Kutztown.
Contributing to the effort were sophomore Stephen Gambino (125-5th), junior's Sean Carr (141-5th) and Dave Williams (184-3rd), senior Charles Deighton (HWT-5th), and graduate student John Stout (133-4th).
First year Head Coach Jason Kutz was pleased with the way his team fought, stating "The team is definitely moving forward in the right direction...we are now fighting as a team, which is exactly what is needed to succeed at this level."
The Warriors will see action very soon as they play host to Delaware Valley College on February 1st at 6pm at Koehler Fieldhouse, and then travel to Boston University on February 4th at 4pm.
