GREENSBORO, N.C. - Redshirt freshman Thad Frick fell one win short of placing in his first collegiate competition for East Stroudsburg University at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC Greensboro at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.
Frick and redshirt sophomore Jeff Jacobs, both wrestling at 165 pounds, were the only Warriors to advance to Tuesday's action in the consolation bracket. Frick opened his day with a 9-7 decision over Derek Sickel of The Citadel before dropping a 4-3 decision to Obie Simpson of Kent State, his second one-point loss of the tournament.
On Monday, Frick fell 6-5 to Edinboro's Jarrod King, the No. 2 seed and the 2008 PSAC champion, in the opening round. He won by major decision in his first match in the wrestlebacks and then advanced to Tuesday's action with a win by medical forfeit.
Jacobs won three matches on Monday, including a fall and a major decision, before he was bounced from the championship bracket by top-seeded Mack Lewnes of Cornell. Jacobs took a 10-4 decision over Virginia's Beau Fisher to stay alive, but was pinned by Duke's Willy Mello at 2:12 in the first period of his only match on Tuesday.
ESU had four wrestlers advance to the round of 16 on Monday - redshirt seniors Matt Swallow (133) and Scott Heckman (149), redshirt junior Shane Mallory (197), and Jacobs.
The Warriors will be back in action at the Penn Duals on Saturday, where the host Quakers will be joined by Franklin & Marshall, Gloucester and Delaware State.
