SHIPPENSBURG - East Stroudsburg University had a banner weekend at the PSAC Track and Field Championships, as both the men's and women's teams placed fourth in the conference and the Warriors had seven individuals reach provisional qualifying standards for the NCAA Division II Championships over Memorial Day weekend.
The ESU men scored 94.5 points, the highest total that they have posted since 1979. The women tied for fourth with Shippensburg with 81 points, 30 more points than they scored at the 2006 PSAC Outdoor Championships.
The Warriors national qualifiers include Leslie Martin, who reached standards in both the 400 hurdles and the high jump (5-7 ¾), and Iuri Pinto and Drew Nesbitt, who both reached qualifying times in the 1500.
Jeremy Burger (shot put - 52-5 ½), Andrew Richard (long jump - 23-6), Kahla Doran (javelin - 198-6) and Russell Smith (110 hurdles - 14.70) also reached provisional qualifying marks.
Martin's time in the 400 hurdles and Smith's time in the 110 hurdles both set school records.
Pinto was ESU's lone individual winner for the weekend, finishing the 1500 in 3:50.53, while Nesbitt was fifth. The Warriors had nine second place finishes, including Martin in both the high jump and long jump.
Other runner-up performances included Richard in the long jump, Burger in the shot put and Matthew Gallup in the pole vault (15-1 ½) for the men, and Doran in the javelin for the women.
Both squads had a relay team finish second. The women's 4x100 team of Bettina Heinsohn, Katherine Doyle, Ashley Murdock and Theresa Manera was second in 48.29. The men's 4x400 relay team of Edward Kiser, Tony Prudente, Travis Pregnar and Jon Reid finished in 3:16.59.
Amber Horn (10,000), Trina Carito (heptathlon) and Smith (110 hurdles) were all third for the Warriors on Friday, along with Kenny Cardullo who was third in the javelin on Saturday.
Lock Haven edged Shippensburg 139-138 for the men's team title, with Slippery Rock third and ESU fourth. On the women's side, Slippery Rock posted a wide margin of victory over Kutztown and Lock Haven, followed by ESU and Shippensburg in the tie for fourth.
