Nineteen athletes will represent the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with their participation in the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The national meet will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11, at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.
The goal for many will be an All-America finish, which is accomplished by placing among the top eight in a given event.
The PSAC boasts three returning All-Americans in Indiana (Pa.)'s Sean Strauman (800m), Lock Haven's Jim Dempsey (high jump) and Slippery Rock's Andi Rose (60m hurdles). What's more, the league has six men and five women who enter the meet ranked in the top 10 in their specialty, as well one men's distance medley relay team.
Thirteen men will represent the PSAC in nine events while six women will represent the league in four events, a significant increase from last year's 11 total participants from the league. Lock Haven has the most athletes qualified (8), followed by IUP (3), Shippensburg (2), Slippery Rock (2), and Shippensburg, California, West Chester, Clarion and East Stroudsburg with one each.
For the women, Slippery Rock's Andi Rose will try for her second consecutive All-America finish in the 60m hurdles (8th, 8.70). Teammate Jennifer Hansen is ranked eighth in the pole vault, clearing 12-04. Clarion's Erin Richard looks to continue her record-breaking season in the 5,000m (9th, 17:09.48) while IUP's Nicole Blaesser will also provide competition in the 5,000m (11th, 17:12.33). East Stroudsburg's Leslie Martin and Lock Haven's Chelsea Morse each boast a top 10 mark in the high jump. Morse has cleared 5-09.25 while Martin owns a mark of 5-08, good for second and sixth best in the nation, respectively.
West Chester's Eric Broadbent is the lone PSAC participant who will compete in more than one event. A field specialist, Broadbent will compete in the high jump and triple jump. He has recorded a mark of 49-09.75 (6th) in the triple jump and cleared 6-10.25 (15th) in the high jump. IUP's Sean Strauman is the highest seeded athlete with his time of 1:51.58 (2nd) in the 800m. Lock Haven's Paul Martin ranks seventh in the 60m hurdles (8.10) while teammate Ryan Blood ranks fifth in the 5,000m (14:19.61). Shippensburg's Nate Reider owns the eighth best distance in the weight throw at 61-06.75 while Red Raider Jamal James is seeded ninth in the 200m (21.64).
Another notable on the men's side is returning All-American Jim Dempsey of Lock Haven. He is seeded 11th in the high jump (6-10.25).
