EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior Paul Wagner (men's first team) and senior Kristen Morby (women's second team) both represent East Stroudsburg University on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Track and Cross Country teams, it was announced Thursday.
The selections give ESU 10 Academic All-District honorees for the second straight year. The Warriors' student-athletes are tied with Gannon, in its first year in the PSAC, for the most in the 16-school conference. ESU also led the conference a year ago.
Wagner (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley), an All-American in the hammer throw during the outdoor season, has a 3.81 grade-point average in Sport Management. He set ESU and PSAC records with a throw of 196-9 to place sixth in Division II and has won the last two PSAC championships in the event. His throw of 190-3 at the PSAC Championships was a meet record.
He also holds the last two PSAC indoor titles in the weight throw and went to the NCAA Championships in March, where he was ninth with a school record of 61-4 3/4. Wagner was the PSAC Field Athlete of the Meet at both the indoor and outdoor championships as a sophomore.
Morby (Doylestown/Central Bucks West) was named to the women's Academic All-District team for the second straight year. She was the only ESU student-athlete to graduate with a 4.0 cumulative GPA this year while earning her degree in Physical Therapy. Morby set the school record of 10-6 1/4 in the pole vault this spring and also held the indoor record during her career at ESU.
Morby is one of four Warriors student-athletes to be named to the Academic All-District team in her sport in each of the last two years, along with Chris Bach (men's basketball), Danny Drago (men's soccer) and Jackie Yandrisevits (women's basketball). Bach was the first basketball player named to the Academic All-America team in school history.
ESU's other Academic All-District honorees during the 2008-09 academic year were Kailyn Buckley and Lynda Hicks (women's soccer), Toric Robinson (men's soccer), Matt Freed (football) and Bill Hezel (baseball).
The Academic All-District teams are voted on by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Nominees must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key reserve.
