EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University track and field athletes Janelle Smith and Paul Wagner have both been named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II All-Academic Team for the second straight year, it was announced this week.
Smith (Auburn/Schuylkill Valley), a Speech Pathology major with a 3.69 grade-point average, and Wagner (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley), a Sport Management major with a 3.77 GPA, are two of five Warriors on the team. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA and reach the NCAA indoor or outdoor qualifying standard to be eligible.
They are joined by Matt Gallup (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin), who has a 3.31 GPA in Exercise Physiology, Drew Miller (Lewisburg/Lewisburg), with a 3.54 GPA in Health and Physical Education, and Tom Sutor (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon), who graduated with a 3.72 GPA in Exercise Science. Smith, Wagner, Gallup and Miller all completed their junior years in May.
Wagner leads the Warriors' list after earning All-America honors in the hammer throw and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America status following the 2008-09 season. He extended his own ESU and PSAC record with a throw of 196-9 to finish fifth in the hammer at the NCAA outdoor championships, was ninth in the weight throw indoors and won PSAC championships in both events for the second straight year.
Smith made her third NCAA appearance in the high jump, placing 10th for a career-best finish. She won the women's eastern high jump at the Penn Relays with a height of 5-7 and was also named to the "Who's Who" list of American Colleges and Universities following her sophomore year.
Gallup was an NCAA automatic qualifier in the pole vault for the second straight year and has won both the PSAC indoor and outdoor championships in the event the last two seasons. He holds both school records with marks of 16-8 3/4 outdoors and 16-0 1/2 indoors and reached the automatic qualifying mark at the Kutztown Invitational the week before winning his fourth PSAC championship.
Miller was an NCAA provisional qualifier in the triple jump during both the indoor and outdoor seasons and is a three-time PSAC champion. He won the indoor title at 48-1 1/4 and just missed on his bid to return to the NCAA championships, and was second at PSACs during the outdoor season. He went to the NCAAs and won both the PSAC indoor and outdoor titles as a sophomore.
Sutor had his season-best throw of 179-1 in the hammer at the Lehigh Invitational and reached the NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the first time in his career. He finished fourth at the PSAC championships at 175-11. His career best mark was less than a foot off the school record originally established by Wagner in 2008.
A total of 386 student-athletes from Division II institutions were recognized on the All-Academic team, 136 males and 250 females, for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track and field season. The PSAC had 21 female student-athletes honored, the second-most for one conference.
