WALNUT, Calif. - East Stroudsburg University sophomore Trina Carito finished 12th in the women's heptathlon at the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which are being held this weekend at Mount San Antonio College in southern California.
Senior Iuri Pinto will be one of seven ESU athletes competing for All-America honors on Saturday. Pinto was second in his heat in the 1500m run on Thursday night to advance to the finals. Sophomore Matt Gallup, an automatic qualifier in the pole vault, and freshman Lynn Mayer, an indoor All-American in the high jump, lead the Warriors' contenders.
Carito competed in the long jump, javelin and 800m run on Friday. She was sixth in the 800, her best finish out of the seven events, with a time of 2:23.24. Carito ran the 800 in a career-best time of 2:23.17 to seal the PSAC championship three weeks ago at IUP.
She long jumped 16-2 and threw the javelin 97-11, the eighth-best mark in the field of 12 competitors.
Carito finished with 4,322 points and was one of three sophomores in the NCAA championship field. She matched her PSAC performance in three events - the 100m hurdles, 200m dash and 800m run.
