INDIANA - Senior Iuri Pinto defended his title in the 1500m and sophomores Matt Gallup (pole vault) and Drew Miller (triple jump) completed their sweep of the 2008 PSAC indoor and outdoor championships for East Stroudsburg University on the final day of the PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at IUP.
Gallup automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II championships and broke his own school record with a height of 16-8 3/4 in the pole vault. The mark is the third-best in Division II entering this weekend.
Miller also repeated as a PSAC indoor and outdoor champion with a distance of 48-5 1/2 in the triple jump.
Pinto won the 1500m in 3:52.69 for his third individual and sixth overall conference championship during his career at ESU. He also won the 1500m (outdoors) and mile (indoors) as a junior, and was a member of three straight indoor Distance Medley Relay championship teams. Pinto was fifth in the 5000m in a time of 15:19.24.
ESU's men's and women's teams both finished fifth, with the men scoring 89 points and the women compiling 71.5 points. Slippery Rock won both conference championships.
The Warriors had five conference champions at both the indoor and outdoor meets, including four multiple winners. Trina Carito won the heptathlon and the indoor triple jump, Paul Wagner won the hammer outdoors and the weight throw indoors, and Gallup and Miller swept their individual events.
Wagner was named the Men's Co-Field Athlete of the Meet after he set the meet record in the hammer at 179-5. He also earned the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet during the indoor season.
Sophomore Andrew McCloskey set the school record and finished second in the 200m in 21.60 seconds and was also fifth in the 100m dash with a time of 10.81 seconds.
Sophomore Niki Pasquarella (3000m steeplechase) and freshman Jasmine Johnson (400m) both earned All-PSAC honors by placing third in their events. Pasquarella ran the steeplechase in 11:34.3, and Johnson finished the 400m in 57.40 seconds.
The women's 4x100m relay team of Katherine Doyle, Johnson, Nashanti Iglesias and Amilee Schillinger was second with a time of 48.55 seconds.
Doyle, Johnson, Carito and Brittiny Mackey were third in the 4x400m relay in 3:53.19, and Doyle placed fourth in the 200m (25.64).
Carito was fifth in the triple jump (36-8 1/2) one day after winning the PSAC championship in the heptathlon.
Freshman Danielle Laws was fourth in the discus with a throw of 125-11, and sophomore Emily Carothers also scored for ESU with an eighth-place finish in the hammer.
Several athletes also finished in the top eight for the ESU men, including sophomore Kenny Cardullo (195-11) and freshman Bill Buis (192-5) who were fifth and sixth in the javelin.
Sophomores Chris Reddick (fifth, 48.53) and Ed Kiser (eighth, 51.03) also gave ESU two of the top eight athletes in the 400m.
Three other sophomores also scored for the Warriors - Rusty Smith (110m hurdles, 7th), Ryan Kramer (high jump, 7th) and Kyle Weir (steeplechase, 8th).
ESU will send athletes to the NYC Challenge on May 11 for their last opportunity to improve their marks for the Division II championships, which will be held May 22-24 in Los Angeles.
