LYNCHBURG, Va. - Sophomore Rusty Smith and freshman Lynn Mayer, both coming off All-America honors at the indoor national championships last weekend, started the outdoor season with strong performances at the Lynchburg Invitational on Saturday.

Smith broke his own school record in the 110m hurdles in 14.67 seconds and finished second in the event, while Mayer won the high jump with a leap of 5-6 for one of the Warriors' nine first-place finishes.

Sophomore Andrew McCloskey led ESU's winners as he was first in both the 100m (10.81) and the 200m (21.84).

Other championship efforts came from Niki Pasquarella (5k), Lori Johanson (10k), Trina Carito (triple jump), Kristen Morby (pole vault), Drew Miller (triple jump) and Paul Wagner (hammer).

Carito, Miller and Wagner, all PSAC indoor champions earlier this month, were each in the top five in three events.

Carito won the triple jump (35-8 3/4), was second in the 100m hurdles (15.91) and third in the high jump (5-0).

Miller was an NCAA indoor qualifier in the triple jump and won with a distance of 45-10 3/4 on Saturday. He also placed second in the long jump (21-9 3/4) and third in the high jump (6-0 3/4).

Wagner won the PSAC title in the weight throw and captured the hammer at Lynchburg with a throw of 162-1. He was also in the top five in the discus (141-6 1/2) and the shot put (45-11 1/4).

Kenny Cardullo, the PSAC champion in the pentathlon indoors and an NCAA qualifier in the javelin as a freshman, placed third with a throw of 190-9 3/4 to open his outdoor season. His sister Allyson Cardullo, a freshman, was also third in the javelin in her first meet at ESU.

ESU will host the first of two home meets this year next weekend with the ESU-Lafayette 7-Way Meet at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
