MANKATO, Minn. - Freshman high jumper Lynn Mayer and sophomore hurdler Rusty Smith both earned All-America honors for East Stroudsburg University at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Mankato State.
Mayer cleared 5-3 and 5-5 on her first attempts and hit 5-7 on her second jump at that height to finish in a tie for fifth with Teona Golding of Seattle Pacific and Slippery Rock freshman Whitney Hendershot. Lock Haven's Chelsea Morse tied for second to give the PSAC three All-Americans in the event.
Smith finished eighth in the 60m hurdles finals in 8.13 seconds, one day after setting the school record in 8.04 seconds in the prelims, lowering the mark of 8.25 which he set at the Armory earlier this year. He also broke the 55m hurdles record three times this season and was second in the PSAC championship two weeks ago at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Mayer and Smith join nine previous ESU track & field athletes who have earned a total of 12 indoor All-America honors. Four athletes - Leslie Martin (2007), Mike Newhard (2002, 2003), Shavanna Ross (2001) and current ESU coach Karen (Way) Gaita (1990, 1991) - were All-Americans in the high jump.
Smith is the first sprinter or hurdler to finish in the top eight at the indoor championships in school history. Jack Goldowski placed sixth in consecutive outdoor championships in the 400m hurdles in 1984 and 1985.
Sophomore Janelle Smith also competed in the high jump, where she was 13th after clearing 5-5 on her final jump.
Sophomore Drew Miller, the PSAC champion in the triple jump, placed 10th with a mark of 46-9.
Senior Iuri Pinto just missed qualifying for the finals in the mile on Saturday and will turn his attention to the outdoor season, where he was the PSAC champion and an NCAA qualifier last spring.
The Warriors will open their outdoor schedule on Saturday in Virginia at the Lynchburg Invitational.
