EAST STROUDSBURG - For the first time in school history, East Stroudsburg University will send four athletes to the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held March 14-15 at Mankato State University in Minnesota.
Sophomore Rusty Smith was an automatic qualifier in the 60m hurdles and will be joined by senior miler Iuri Pinto and two women's high jumpers, freshman Lynn Mayer and sophomore Janelle Smith.
Smith ran an automatic qualifying time of 7.51 in the 55m hurdles at the PSAC Championships last weekend at Koehler Fieldhouse, which converts to a time of 8.04 seconds at 60m. He is seeded seventh in a field of 13 athletes, with the top eight finishers in each event earning All-America honors.
Pinto will be making his first appearance at indoor nationals after qualifying for the outdoor championships in the 1500 last spring. His time of 4:11.63, which he ran at the Armory in New York City on Feb. 15, is 13th of the 14 national qualifiers and less than a second off a spot in the top eight.
Mayer and Smith are tied for sixth in the high jump at 5-7 1/4, which they both cleared to finish third and fourth, respectively, at the PSAC championship meet. The conference has four of the top 10 high jumpers in the nation, including PSAC champion Whitney Hendershot (Slippery Rock) and Lock Haven's Chelsea Morse.
Karen (Way) Gaita '91, the 1991 Division II outdoor champion in the high jump and the only NCAA women's champion in school history, has been ESU's high jump coach for the last decade. Gaita qualified for both the 1996 and 2000 Olympic trials and was a three-time PSAC champion for the Warriors.
