EUGENE, Ore. - East Stroudsburg University's Barry Krammes had the top throw in the javelin at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Friday night at Hayward Field to advance to the finals on Sunday.

Krammes set a personal record by almost 15 feet with a mark of 259-1 on his only throw of the night, which stood up for the top distance of the 24 athletes who were competing for 12 spots in the finals.

The finals begin at 7:15 ET on Sunday and will be broadcast on NBC.

A two-time All-American during his career at ESU, Krammes has finished fifth in the nation with personal records at the last two U.S. Track & Field Championships. He is a 2004 graduate of ESU and a social studies teacher at East Stroudsburg South High School.

He set his previous personal best of 244-5 three weeks ago in Victoria Falls, British Columbia and shattered the mark with his throw on Friday night.

Krammes can earn an Olympic berth with a couple of scenarios, depending on the performances of the other throwers in the field.

He would automatically qualify by finishing in the top three while hitting the Olympic "A" standard of 81.80 meters (269-4). All 12 finalists will have three throws, with the top eight after that round earning three more throws.

Krammes was the only athlete to hit the "B" standard of 77.80 meters (255-3). He leads a field that includes two throwers, Mike Hazle and Leigh Smith, who have reached the "A" standard this year. The finalists do not include U.S. record holder Breaux Greer, who is coming off injury and placed 17th.
