SHIPPENSBURG – Juniors Jamie Ferrigno and Will Norris and sophomore Amanda Kaufman all advanced to at least the second round of their singles brackets to lead East Stroudsburg University at the 2009 PSAC Individual Tennis Championships, which are being held this weekend at Shippensburg.

Ferrigno went the deepest in the bracket for the Warriors, advancing to the third round before falling to No. 2 Axelle Fernandez of California. Ferrigno opened her day with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Chelsea Gibson of Slippery Rock, then came back with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Luisiana Souto of West Chester for a pair of hard-won victories. Fernandez knocked off Ferrigno, 6-2, 6-0.

Kaufman posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Vernae Coleman of Cheyney and fell to Kim Ezzo of Mercyhurst, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round. Junior Katie D’Ambrosia dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Slippery Rock’s Dunja Drmac in her first round match.

In the men’s singles draw, Norris moved into the second round with a 7-5, 6-1 win over West Chester’s Michael Sim before running into No. 3 seed Kyle King of Mercyhurst, who won by a 6-2, 6-0 score. Junior Jared Rosenberg was dealt a first round match-up with No. 2 Kaushik Das of Kutztown and fell 6-1, 6-2.

The Warriors’ men’s and women’s doubles teams also won their first round matches before falling in the second round.

D’Ambrosia and Ferrigno won their first match, 8-6, against Bloomsburg’s Alison Carney and Katie Hasyn, and played the No. 1 seed, California’s Nina Kowalski and Laurie Navarro, in the quarterfinals, falling 8-3. D’Ambrosia and Ferrigno, an All-PSAC East doubles team the last two years, are 5-3 this fall.

Will Norris and graduate student James Norris were also bumped by the top seed in their bracket, Das and Arpit Sharma of Kutztown, by an 8-2 score. They won their opening round match 9-7 over West Chester’s Matt Thomas and David Goldenberg to advance to the semifinals in the six-team bracket.
