NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The East Stroudsburg University men's soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 upset of the host school, Friday night at the Southern Connecticut State Tournament.

Southern Connecticut State advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals last year before losing to Franklin Pierce on penalty kicks. Southerm Connecticut was ranked No. 7 in the NCSCAA/Adidas National Rankings.

Wes Gayle scored off a Roy Thompson assist midway through the second half for the lone score with 14 minutes left. A strong ESU defense, led by keeper Billy Sterner, made the lead stand up. Sterner, a senior, made five saves his first shutout of the season.

The Warriors, 1-0, will play Franklin Pierce Sunday at 11 a.m.
