EAST STROUDSBURG - No. 2 seed Dowling began defense of its 2006 national championship with a 2-0 win over No. 3 Bridgeport in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Northeast Regional on Friday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

Junior Laurencin had a hand in both goals for the Golden Lions (16-2-3), opening the scoring 5:25 into the match and assisting on a goal by Ahmodoul Gaye in the 66th minute.

Nemanja Veljovic made two saves for Dowling to post the shutout. Milos Suljagic had seven saves for Bridgeport (10-5-5).

Dowling advances to Sunday's regional final against the winner of the match between No. 1 East Stroudsburg and No. 4 NYIT.
