EAST STROUDSBURG - Wide receiver Evan Prall scored five times and the East Stroudsburg University football team beat Lock Haven, 45-14, Saturday at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Prall caught nine passes for 254 yards and four touchdowns and also returned a punt for a score as the Warriors improved to 1-1.
The victory was the 200th of coach Denny's Douds career. Douds is the second coach in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference history with 200 victories and the ninth coach in Division II to reach the milestone.
Following the game, Douds was presented with the game ball from offensive coordinator Mike Terwilliger and a plaque from ESU President Dr. Robert J. Dillman and ESU Athletic Director Dr. Tom Gioglio.
Prall set an ESU single-game record with his 254 yards, eclipsing the total of 236 of Brett Witmer in 1996. It is also the fourth-best mark in PSAC history.
Prall's five touchdowns tied the ESU single-game record held by Danny Roskos. Roskos set the record in 1946 against Montclair State.
Quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger completed 17 of 26 passes for 343 yards and five touchdowns. It was the 23rd time he has thrown for more than 300 yards and the 39th consecutive game he has thrown a touchdown pass. Both of those marks are NCAA records. It is also the fifth time in his career he has thrown for five touchdowns.
ESU limited Lock Haven to 115 yards rushing and 114 yards passing. Linebacker Jayson Frank made eight tackles while Dave Lotier added seven. Defensive linemen Miguel Rivera and John Vetter each had six tackles.
Lock Haven opened the game with an onside kick and the marched 50 yards for a score. Adam Lawrence rushed for a nine-yard score at the 9:50 mark.
The Warriors tied the game on their first possession when Terwilliger hit Prall for a three-yard score, capping a nine-play, 51-yard drive. Prall caught a 43-yard pass on the second plan and Terwilliger later connected with Doug Ogden for 11 yards. Eric Petters kicked the PAT to tie the game.
ESU went ahead to stay in the second quarter with a 12-play, 71-yard drive. Terwilliger hit Ogden for six yards, found Sam Shuman for 16 and then connected with Prall for an 18-yard score with 3:08 left in the first half.
Prall caught his third touchdown to end the first half. Terwilliger scrambled for 12 yards to open the drive and then found Prall for 41 yards to get the ball to the six. Following a timeout by each team, Terwilliger threw the ball up into the corner of the end zone and Prall pulled it away from two defenders for the touchdown and a 21-7 lead at intermission.
Terwilliger hooked up with Joe Partridge for a 29-yard score early in the third quarter. It was Partridge's second career touchdown and gave ESU a 28-7 lead.
Lock Haven punted on its next possession. Prall fielded the ball at the 31, dropped it and picked it up then ran up the home sidelines for a 69-yard touchdown. It was the first ESU punt return for a touchdown since 2003 when Derek Lucas returned one against Lenoir-Rhyne.
Prall concluded his afternoon with an 81-yard touchdown reception with 10:18 left in the game when he outran the Lock Haven secondary.
Lock Haven added its final touchdown with less than two minutes to play when Ilio DiPaolo hit Chris Hawkins for an eight-yard touchdown.
ESU is now 1-1 and will play at IUP Saturday at 6 p.m. Lock Haven is 0-2 and will host Millersville at 7 p.m.
