INDIANA - East Stroudsburg University quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger became the NCAA Division II all-time leader in career passing yards but IUP used a potent ground game to beat the Warriors 35-20, Saturday night at George P. Miller Stadium.
Terwilliger completed 17 of 26 passes for 256 yards. He hit Evan Prall in the first quarter for a 48-yard gain and it vaulted him past Joey Conrad of Glenville State. Conrad threw for 11,884 yards from 2002-05.
Terwilliger now has 12,066 career passing yards in just 40 games. His NCAA record of 39 consecutive games with a touchdown was stopped.
IUP tailback Chris Morgan had a career game for the Indians who are now 2-0. He rushed 18 times for a school-record 286 yards and three touchdowns. Kareem Dutrieuille added 69 yards on 16 carries.
Prall caught four passes for 126 yards while Doug Ogden hauled in four passes for 56 yards. Five players carried the ball for the Warriors and combined for 103 yards and all three touchdowns.
The contest featured 34 first-quarter points and 303 yards of combined total offense in the first 15 minutes in a game played in front of a large crowd during IUP's Athletic Hall of Fame inductions.
The Warriors opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game. On the third play of the game, Terwilliger hit Prall for a 40-yard first down. Terwilliger then ran the option and tossed it to Prall, who ran it in for a 15-yard touchdown, the first rushing touchdown of his illustrious career. The extra point was wide right and the Warriors had a 6-0 lead at 12:52 of the first quarter.
IUP took its first lead midway through the first quarter when Chris Morgan scored on a 61-yard scoring run. Nick Wallace kicked the PAT for a 7-6 lead with 6:55 left in the first quarter.
Terwilliger put the Warriors back ahead on their next possession. He hit Prall for that 48-yard gain to put the ball at the 11. Terwilliger ran for six yards and fullback Joe Kircher bulled his way in from the one for the score. Eric Petters kicked the extra point for a 13-7 ESU lead with 4:13 left in the first quarter.
IUP answered with a five-play, 57-yard drive to take the lead for a second time. It was Morgan again getting to the end zone, this time from 26 yards out, for a 14-13 advantage.
The Warriors fumbled the ensuring kickoff and the Indians took advantage. Quarterback Kevin Weidl hit Rickie Simmons for a 21-13 lead with 26 seconds left in the first quarter.
ESU missed a 41-yard field goal and Morgan again found the end zone, this time on a 51-yard run that upped the Indians lead to 28-13 with eight minutes left in the first half.
The Warriors cut their deficit to eight with four minutes left in the first half. They benefited from a personal foul, face mask call on the kick off that put the ball at the IUP 49. Terwilliger hit Prall for a 23-yard gain on third and five to put the ball at the 10 and three players later, Kircher scored from a yard deep. Petters kicked the PAT to make it 28-20.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Anthony Rodriguez made it a 35-20 IUP lead when he scored on a 31-yard end around with 12:04 left in the game.
The Warriors got the ball back but IUP forced a fumble and ran out the clock.
ESU is now 1-2 and will host PSAC West favorite California Saturday at 1:05 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
