BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) and wide out Evan Prall (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) both had career days as the East Stroudsburg University football team beat C.W. Post 66-49, Saturday afternoon at Hickox Field in Long Island.
Terwilliger had career highs in touchdown passes (nine) and yards passing (546) while Prall caught four passes for a career-best 207 yards as the Warriors improved to 3-0, beating their straight 2004 playoff team.
The nine touchdown passes is also a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record and one short of tying the NCAA Division II record. Former ESU standout Damian Paolucci threw seven touchdown passes three times in 1996.
Prall scored three times, as did fullback Anthony Carfagno (Phoenixville, Pa/./Phoenixville) and wide out Tim Strenfel (Hanover Twp./Hanover).
Terwilliger hit on 20 of 32 passes and Derek Lucas (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) ran for a season-best 92 yards as ESU racked up 672 yards of total offense heading into its bye week. Terwilliger completed passes to seven different receivers and has thrown for 8,001 yards in his career.
Prall had 172 yards receiving last week but eclipsed that mark with two long touchdown catches in the decisive third quarter.
ESU led 31-21 at halftime but scored 28 points in the third quarter to open up a 24-point lead.
Prall had scoring receptions of 37, 75 and 49 yards while Strenfel caught touchdowns of 29, 54 and 34 yards. Carfagno had scoring receptions of 17, 13 and 51 yards.
C.W. Post quarterback Rob Blount kept the Pioneers in the game with 216 yards passing and 221 yards on the ground. He threw for two scores and ran for two more.
In all, there were 48 first downs, 762 passing yards and 1,200 yards of total offense.
For the third straight week, the Warriors elected to receive the opening kick and for the third straight time, took an early lead. Saturday, it was Prall catching a 37-yard completion for a touchdown less than two minutes into the game. Mark Brubaker (Stouchsburg, Pa./Conrad Weiser) made the first of his nine extra points for a 7-0 lead with 13:03 left in the first quarter. Brubaker made all nine PATs, tying his career-best, and now has 20 this season, pushing his career total to 115, passing Ed Detwiler as the school's leader in extra points.
The Pioneers answered with a 10-play scoring drive but Terwilliger came back and hit Carfagno for a 17-yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead with 4:56 left in the first quarter.
C.W. Post came back to tie the score late in the first quarter on a one-yard run by Anthony Lazarus, the first of his two touchdowns.
Terwilliger was intercepted on the next drive and the Pioneers took their only lead of the game, 21-14, five seconds into the second quarter, when Blount threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Heller.
ESU tied the score on its next possession when Carfagno scored on a 13-yard screen pass.
C.W. Post punted on the ensuing possession, the first of the game, and the Warriors took advantage when Terwilliger hit a wide open Strenfel for a 29-yard scoring toss.
Seven minutes later, Brubaker made his fifth field goal of the season, splitting the uprights from 25 yards away for a 31-21 ESU lead as the clock ran out on the first half.
The Pioneers came out inspired in the second half with an 81-yard, six-play drive that culminated with Blount running for a 60-yard score to bring C.W. Post within three, 31-28.
Terwilliger answered once again, this time connecting with a wide open Strenfel for a 54-yard touchdown.
The Warriors' defense forced a punt on the next possession and Terwilliger hit Prall for a 75-yard score on the first play of the drive to increase the advantage to 45-28.
On the next Pioneers possession, linebacker Fred Rice (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) forced a fumble and cornerback Michael Wiggins (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) recovered before Prall caught a 51-yard touchdown pass on the second play following the turnover for a 52-28 ESU lead.
C.W. Post answered with a touchdown before Carfagno and Terwilliger hooked up for a 51-yard score and a 59-42 lead.
Strenfel and Terwilliger put the game out of reach though when they connected for a 34-yard score and a 66-42 lead with less than three minutes left in the game.
Linebacker John Vetter (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) led the ESU defense with 16 tackles. Rice had nine stops and safety Matt Crispell (Berwick, Pa./Berwick), linebacker Noel Nation (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) and linebacker John Glenn (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) made eight.
