EAST STROUDSBURG - The NCAA Division II record for career 300 yard games belongs to East Stroudsburg University junior quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger but the Warriors' coaches are quick to point out it is a team award.
In a 31-24 overtime loss to Bloomsburg, Terwilliger threw for 396 yards, his 17th career game with at least 300 yards passing, setting a new NCAA Division II record. He extended the record last week with 347 yards against Clarion. In his 29-game career, he has 18 games with more than 300 yards passing. For his career, he has thrown for 8,953 yards.
Chris Hatcher of Valdosta (Ga.) State (1991-94) and Justin Coleman of Nebraska-Kearney (1997-200) shared the record of 16.
"This record is a by-product of our offense, our wide receivers, our running backs and our offensive line," ESU coach Denny Douds said. "And also of Jimmy's preparation, his execution, his skills and his competitiveness."
Mike Terwilliger, ESU's offense coordinator and Jimmy's father, agreed.
"This honor should be shared with the offense -- the offensive line that provides protection, the running backs that pick up blitzes and the wide receiver that run our passing game," said Terwilliger, a former star quarterback himself.
Center Dan Crozier, guards Jeff Kocsis and Mike Engler and tackles Colin Delaney and Michael Habel as well as running backs Anthony Carfagno and Derek Lucas and wide receivers Evan Prall, Tim Strenfel and Ben Culver join Terwilliger in the starting offense.
Terwilliger has completed passes to 14 different receivers this season and 10 receivers average at least 10 yards per catch.
Ty Detmer of BYU holds the Division I record with 33 career 300-yard passing games while Neil Lomax of Portland State has the Division I-AA record off 28. Kirk Baumgartner is the Division III leader with 24.
Terwilliger also holds the NCAA Division II record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass with 29.
The Warriors are 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division. They will host Kutztown Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
