EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger threw for 384 yards and five touchdowns as the Warriors overwhelmed C.W. Post 55-28, Saturday in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region final in front of 3,200 fans at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
The Warriors, now 11-2, will play in the national semifinals Saturday at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Michigan. Grand Valley is the No. 1 team in the country and the lone unbeaten at 10-0. Grand Valley State beat Saginaw Valley State 28-17 to win the Northwest Region.
ESU won 11 games for the first time ever and also captured its first-ever quarterfinal win, thanks to 535 yards of total offense and another great effort from Terwilliger. This was the third straight playoff game that ESU scored 50-plus point.
Terwilliger threw for more than 300 yards for the 22nd time in his career and threw a touchdown pass in his 36th consecutive game. Both are NCAA Division II records.
ESU tailback Derek Lucas rushed for 103 yards to balance the offense while Terwilliger rushed for 35 yards. Ben Culver had four catches for 121 yards and a score while Evan Prall and Tim Strenfel both had two touchdowns. Prall had five catches for 93 yards and Strenfel had four catches for 79 yards.
The Warriors defense held C.W. Post quarterback Rob Blount to 103 yards passing and 60 yards rushing. Blount was 9 of 19 passing with an interception and was sacked twice. Freshman Anthony Lazarus rushed for a game-high 166 yards and two scores.
Linebacker Fred Rice led the Warriors with 17 tackles while end Greg Thoman has 11, including a sack.
ESU won the toss and went ahead to stay on its first possession. Terwilliger hit Strenfel for a 15-yard score less than two minutes into the game.
C.W. Post scored on its first possession on a one-yard Lazarus run but the PAT was blocked.
Fullback Anthony Carfagno made it a 14-6 ESU lead with a one-yard run and Mark Brubaker kicked a 32-yard field goal for a 17-6 ESU advantage with five minutes left in the second quarter.
Lazarus scored from three yards out but again, the PAT was blocked and ESU led 17-12 with 51 seconds left.
C.W. Post was awarded a safety late in the half when the Warriors were called for holding in the end zone.
ESU outside linebacker Noel Nation returned Blount's interception 29 yards for a touchdown on the first series of the second half to up the lead to 10.
Terwilliger found Culver for a 54-yard scoring toss for a 31-14 lead. Following a C.W. Post punt, Terwilliger hit a diving Prall for a seven-yard score and a 24-pint Warriors lead.
After Matt Crispell broke up a fourth-down pass attempt, Brubaker kicked a 48-yard field goal for a 41-14 lead. It was Brubaker's career long and came with the wind in his face.
Terwilliger hit Prall for his second touchdown, this time from 25 yards out and then connected with Strenfel from 38 yards away to close the Warriors scoring.
C.W. Post added points on a one-yard Adebayo Adedapo run and when Frank Kelly returned a fumble for a 29-yard score.
