BLOOMSBURG - East Stroudsburg University quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger won the battle of Harlon Hill candidates as the Warriors beat Bloomsburg, 52-39, Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs at Redman Stadium in front of more than 5,000 fans.

Terwilliger, a junior, threw for four touchdowns and ran for another and helped ESU come back from three deficits and advance to the Northeast Regional final for the second time in as many years.

ESU tied the school record for wins in a season and improved to 10-2 and will host C.W. Post Saturday at noon at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Saginaw Valley and Grand Valley State game in the Northwest final. No. 5 C.W. Post upset top-seeded Shepherd 28-21. The Warriors beat C.W. Post 66-49 in September when Terwilliger threw for nine touchdowns.

Terwilliger had just 34 yards passing in the first half but completed 13 of 16 passes in the second half for 190 yards to rally the Warriors. For the game, he completed 16 of 25 passes for 224 yards and those four touchdowns. It was the 35th straight game he has thrown a touchdown pass, extending his NCAA Division II record. He also ran for nine yards.

ESU fullback Anthony Carfagno rushed 19 times for a career-high 170 yards while Evan Prall caught six passes for 110 yards and a pair of scores.

Bloomsburg tailback Jamar Brittingham rushed 29 times for 200 yards but the Huskies turned the ball over four times and saw their 12-game winning streak come to an end. Bloomsburg, the No. 2 team in the final American Football Coaches Association poll, ends its season 11-1.

Things didn't start well for the Warriors who fell behind 8-0 early in the game. Bloomsburg got a safety on ESU's first play of the game when Terwilliger was sacked in the end zone. The Huskies then put up six points on a 23 and 29-yard field goal from Garrett Bloom on their first two possessions.

ESU got within a point on its next possession with a 12-play, 87-yard drive that took nearly six minutes. All 12 plays were runs with Carfagno getting five carries. Terwilliger capped the drive with a seven-yard scoring run.

The Warriors took their first lead early in the second quarter when Zach McDowell blocked a punt and Tyree Townes picked it up and ran seven yards for the touchdown. Mark Brubaker's extra point made it 14-8.

Brittingham scored to put the Huskies back ahead again but Terwilliger hit Doug Ogden, a high school teammate of his, for a 19-yard touchdown and a 21-15 lead. It was Odgen's first career touchdown and Terwilliger's first completion of the game.

Bloomsburg scored on its first two possessions of the second half to build a 29-21 lead with eight minutes left in the third quarter.

Terwilliger cut into the deficit with a three-yard scoring toss to Ben Culver to get the Warriors within one.

The Huskies made it 32-28 on Bloom's third field goal of the game.

ESU outside linebacker John Glenn picked off quarterback Jack Lydic on the first play of the fourth quarter. Three plays later, Terwilliger hit Prall for a 40-yard touchdown. Ogden made a key block and Prall broke two tackles for the score. Brubaker kicked the PAT for his 267th career point, a new ESU and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record, passing Morgan Anderson of Slippery Rock.

Bloomsburg punted on its next possession and Terwilliger and Prall hooked up again to put the Warriors up to stay. Prall made a diving catch in the end zone for the 27-yard score that have ESU a 42-32 advantage.

Noel Nation recovered a fumble on the next possession and Brubaker kicked a 43-yard field goal and a 45-32 lead.

Defensive end Zach Toomey forced a fumble and Morris Jackson recovered at the five-yard line. Two plays later, Carfagno scored from a yard out for the final ESU points.

Townes and inside linebacker John Vetter each had 11 tackles while Fred Rice had 10.
