EAST STROUDSBURG - Former East Stroudsburg University punter and East Stroudsburg South alum Ken Parrish has signed a free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers, the team has announced.
Parrish was a first team All-PSAC East selection in 2004 and 2005, his junior and senior seasons for the Warriors. He averaged 40.3 yards per punt and landed 59 of his 174 punts inside the 20-yard line for his career.
A high school soccer player, Parrish didn't punt for East Stroudsburg South until the fourth game of his senior year. He joined the team at the urging of quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger, who was doubling as the Cavaliers' punter at the time.
Both Parrish and Terwilliger enrolled at ESU in 2002. Terwilliger redshirted his freshman year while Parrish stepped in as the Warriors' punter and averaged 36.7 yards on 53 punts, with 15 inside the 20, 11 fair catches and only one touchback.
Terwilliger took over as the starting quarterback in 2003 and went on to set Division II records for passing yards (14,350) and total offense (16,064), and tied the NCAA all-divisions record with 148 career touchdown passes. Parrish benefited from Terwilliger's performance as well, as he averaged only 40.3 punts per game over his last three seasons.
In his final two years, Parrish averaged 42.5 yards per punt, with 30 of his 75 punts landing inside the 20 and just four touchbacks. As a senior, he punted 42 times in 14 games as ESU won the Division II Northeast Regional championship and advanced to the national semifinals for the first time in school history.
Parrish joins Terwilliger (Minnesota Vikings) and wide receiver Evan Prall (Arizona Cardinals) as the third former ESU player to earn a trip to an NFL mini camp since the NFL Draft on April 28-29.
