ALLENDALE, MI - The record-breaking season of the East Stroudsburg University football team came to an end in the NCAA Division II semifinals with a 55-20 loss at Grand Valley State University in front of more than 5,500 fans who braved the 23-degree temperatures at Lubbers Stadium.

The Lakers, the No. 1 team in the country according to the American Football Coaches Association, scored 34 first-quarter points and held the Warriors to 297 yards of total offense and advanced to their fourth NCAA Division II title game in the past five years. Grand Valley State will play Northwest Missouri State Saturday at 3 p.m. in Florence, Ala. Northwest Missouri State scored with 23 seconds remaining to beat North Alabama 25-24.

Grand Valley State quarterback Cullen Finnerty completed 10 of 14 passes in the first half and finished the game with 241 yards passing. The Lakers did not attempt a pass in the second half.

The Lakers were aggressive on defense with 12 sacks and held the Warriors to 287 yards passing and 10 yards rushing and improved to 12-0.

The Warriors, playing their first game in Michigan and in the semifinals for the first time, concluded their season 11-3. ESU set a school record for wins in a season and played in December for the first time.

ESU quarterback Jimmy Terwilliger completed 24 of 47 passes for 287 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Senior tailback Derek Lucas became the sixth Warrior to run for 1,000 yards in a season with 42 yards on 11 carries. Lucas concluded his senior year with 1,021 yards.

Grand Valley won the toss and took the ball. Seven plays and 87 yards later, the Lakers led 7-0 following a 19-yard scoring run by Brandon Langston.

The Lakers made it 14-0 after blocking a punt. Finerty hit Langston for a 22-yard score on the second play after the block.

GVSU tailback Aston Martin scored his first touchdown later in the quarter, a one-yard run. Brandon Carr later returned a fumble 40 yards for a score and Finnerty hit Langston for an 81-yard touchdown and then Ryan Hukill for a five-yard toss for a 41-0 lead.

The Warriors got back on the board with under four minutes to go in the first half. Terwilliger capped a 20-yard drive with a two-yard scoring run after a Matt Crispell interception.

Terwilliger extended his NCAA Division II record of consecutive games with a touchdown pass to 37 when he hit Evan Prall for a 20-yard score midway through the third quarter. Mark Brubaker's extra point made it 48-14 with six minutes left in the third quarter. This was the 15th consecutive game in which Prall has caught a touchdown passes.

Senior Tim Strenfel, who holds the career record for receiving yards, scored the Warriors' third touchdown when he hauled in an 11-yard scoring toss from Terwilliger.

The Lakers extended their lead when Brandon Carr scooped up the on sides kick and ran for a 47-yard score.
