EAST STROUDSBURG - Redshirt sophomore quarterback Matt Marshall, the reigning PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week, has been recognized as the d2football.com National Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in East Stroudsburg University's 45-18 win at Millersville last Saturday.
Marshall (York/Spring Grove) was 11-for-19 for 258 yards and two touchdowns after entering the game midway through the second quarter. He inherited a 14-3 lead from redshirt senior quarterback Tim Roken, who threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns before leaving due to injury.
Marshall threw both touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, hooking up with redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jeff Giglio for scoring plays of 34 and 86 yards. Marshall also hit Giglio for a pair of touchdowns in his first career start, a 314-yard, three TD night against Cheyney on Sept. 27.
He completed his first two passes for 40 yards against Millersville before throwing an interception, and had a screen pass intercepted on the next drive. Marshall more than made up for the mistake by ripping the ball away from defensive lineman Chad Miller and running 35 yards to set up a 16-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Sam Shuman to Drew Stem that gave the Warriors a 21-3 halftime lead.
Roken, Marshall and Shuman all threw for touchdowns as ESU gained 424 yards through the air against the Marauders, their second-highest output this season. The Warriors have thrown for more than 300 yards in five of their 10 games this season and lead the PSAC in passing offense with 288.2 yards per game.
ESU travels to Slippery Rock on Saturday looking to finish the regular season with a 9-2 record. The Warriors have won nine games in a season six times under head coach Denny Douds, and seven times to date in school history.
