STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University senior All-American Vanessa Andes battled the cold, the rain and the mud to win the Pete Nevins Invitational cross country meet hosted by ESU, Saturday in Stroudsburg.
Andes, who did not race last week due to an illness, finished the five-kilometer course in 20:04.5.
No team scores were kept in the nine-team event that was also open to ESU alumni and open runners.
ESU had eight female runners in the top 11. Jackie Young was third, followed by Carol Bullen and Corianne Gerbino. Katie Chawner was eighth, followed by Amber Horn, Lori Johanson and Chrissy Greer. Clarissa Cooball was 26th while Danielle Krawtiz was 24th and Allison Rankis 43rd.
Pat Carr was the Warriors' top men's finisher, coming in fourth in 17:29.1 in the 5k course. Michael St. Lawrence, the ESU cross country and track and field graduate assistant, finished first in 17:10.9. Monmouth's Martin Suarez was second in 17:12.7.
ESU's James Coomber was 11th, while Anthony Femia was 13th and Matt Frable 14th. Nick Goffi finished 19th and Pete Miller 20th. Mitch Slater finished in 24th place with Rob Innis (26th), Jon Douglas (28th), Kyle Weir (33rd), Matt Redcay (34th) and Frank Adragna (41st) all finishing in under 19:25.
The race is named for longtime East Stroudsburg University Sports Information Director Pete Nevins, who retired four years ago.
The Warriors will run next week at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships at Slippery Rock University.
