EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore Jonna Trexler and freshman Corinne Fitzgerald finished second and third to lead East Stroudsburg University to a five-point margin over Kutztown for the women’s team championship at the 6th Annual Nevins Invitational on Saturday morning.

Trexler (19:54) and Fitzgerald (20:03) both turned in quality times for the ESU women, while freshman Jim Romano led the Warriors men with a time of 16:56 to place fourth. La Salle earned the team title, ESU was second and Lehigh finished third.

Caitlin Dorgan of Delaware Valley shattered the women’s course record by 45 seconds with a time of 18:56. The previous best time was 19:41 turned in by Chelsie Boska of Drew University in 2006.

The Warriors posted a 71-76 victory over Kutztown with the top seven places scored for each team. Freshman Cassandra Lacorazza was 18th for ESU in 21:31, Ally Galvin was 21st in 21:45 and sophomore Jenna Fisher was 34th in 22:20. Freshman Sarah Laird and sophomore Lisa Lower rounded out the Warriors scorers.

The men’s top seven included Romano, sophomore Tom Zarnoch (8th), freshman Jared Wilson (17th), freshman Mike Saparito (19th), junior Dan Bowden (20th), senior Jeff Buck (22nd) and senior Kevin Tran (47th) contributing to the team score.

Drew Nesbitt, the course record holder, was the top finisher among the ESU alumni with a time of 17:05.

The Nevins Invitational, first held in 2004, is one of several ways that the memory of Pete Nevins has been honored since he passed away in January 2007. Nevins, ESU’s sports information director from 1969-2002, has also been honored in the name of the PSAC’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year and ECAC-SIDA’s Distinguished Achievement Award.

The Warriors are back in action next weekend at the PSAC Championships at Edinboro, with the NCAA Regionals the following weekend at Mansfield.
