EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior Niki Pasquarella will look for her first All-PSAC cross country performance while the talented tandem of freshmen Doug Jankowski and Greg Laraia lead a young men's team into the 2008 PSAC Cross Country Championships, which will be held on Saturday at Lock Haven.

Pasquarella earned All-PSAC status in outdoor track last season, placing third in the steeplechase, and hopes to add cross country honors to her growing resume with a top-20 performance on Saturday. She has led ESU in 10 of its last 11 meets, including placing sixth out of 65 runners on Lock Haven's course earlier this year.

On the men's side, Jankowski has turned in the Warriors' top performance in three of their six regular season meets, while Laraia clocked ESU's top time at the Fordham Invite in his first collegiate race. Five of the squad's 10 runners will be freshmen, but 22nd year head coach Joe Koch expects the men to contend for a spot in the top half of the very competitive PSAC.

The Warriors will be competing without four-time All-PSAC runner Iuri Pinto for the first time since 2003 and aren't expected to have a runner at the front of the field, but can still make noise in the conference if they run as a pack. Against a large national field at Slippery Rock, ESU's top five runners were separated by just 41 seconds and all placed in the top 50. The 2008 schedule also includes a team championship against a 13-school field at the Don Cathcart Invitational in Maryland.

Juniors Pat Carr and Ryan Doyle, two runners with PSAC experience, will be in ESU's top group. Sophomore Chris Zadroga and juniors Jeff Buck and Kyle Weir will push for spots in the top five, and three more freshmen - Sam Janssen, Sean Norberg and Tom Zarnoch - will also be making their PSAC debut. Norberg and Zadroga were third and fourth, respectively, at last week's Nevins Invitational.

Koch's women's squad will have its top 10 runners available for the first time all season and could be in line to knock off several teams who finished ahead of ESU earlier this year.

Freshman Jonna Trexler competed last week for the first time since the season-opening Fordham Invite and finished fifth in the Nevins Invite behind junior Rachel Ostroski, who was second. Sophomore Amy Moratz should also be among the Warriors' top five, and senior Amanda Bradbury was the team's top finisher at last year's PSAC championships and has always run well at the PSAC and NCAA regional meets.

Sophomore Kristine Goemaat and freshman Brooke Dunphy can also break into the top five, and senior Kathleen Magerr, junior Bree Kelly and freshman Jenna Fisher will look for solid performances on Lock Haven's course.

The men's race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the women at noon. Jankowski was sixth and Laraia was eighth at the Lock Haven Invite on Sept. 13 to help ESU finish second of six schools, while the women were fourth out of six paced by Pasquarella (6th) and Moratz (16th).
