KUTZTOWN -- The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team, the defending regular season champions, are picked first in the Eastern Division in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll. The ESU men, who also qualified for the playoffs last season, are picked second.

The preseason poll and preseason All-PSAC teams were released Thursday during the annual Media Luncheon at Kutztown's Beekey Education Building.

The ESU women won the PSAC Eastern Division regular season with a 9-3 record and earned the top seed in the playoffs. ESU was picked ahead of West Chester, Millersville, Kutztown, Mansfield, Bloomsburg and Cheyney. California was the top pick in the Western Division.

Senior guard and captain Maryellen Onofre was chosen to the preseason team, as was sophomore Jackie Yandrisevits. Onofre was a first-team All-PSAC selection last year and averaging 12.5 points per game and making 63 three-pointers. Yandrisevits was the PSAC Rookie of the Year after averaging a team-high 13.5 points per game.

The ESU men were the first team to qualify for the PSAC playoffs last year and finished tied for second in the Eastern Division with a 7-5 record. West Chester was the top pick in the Eastern Division, followed by ESU, Millersville, Cheyney, Kutztown, Mansfield and Bloomsburg. Shippensburg was the top pick in the Western Division. ESU had no players picked to the preseason team.

The ESU women, under head coach Juliene Simpson, return four starters from last year's 16-12 squad. Senior co-captain Amy Jones and junior Monika Fogelsanger join Onofre and Yandrisevits as returning starters. The Warriors will open their season Nov. 16 at Dowling College.

The ESU men, under head coach Jeff Wilson, also finished 16-12 a year ago and have three starters back. Senior guard Murvin English, junior forward Channon Easley and senior forward Darron Bradley are all back from that team. The Warriors will open their season next weekend against California at the Shepherd Tournament.
