EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University men's basketball player Jimmy Evans (Birdsboro/Daniel Boone) earned the John Pooley Sportsmanship Award during the Warriors Athletic Awards Banquet in the Keystone Room on campus.

The annual Athletic Awards ceremony honored the senior athletes of the year, the scholar athletes of the year, the Dave Carlyon Athletic Training Award, the John Pooley Sportsmanship Award and team MVP and coaches award winners for all of ESU intercollegiate sports.

Special recognition was given to Evans, who recently completed his junior season and was presented with the John Pooley Sportsmanship Award. This award signifies fairness, respect for one's opponents and graciousness in winning or losing. In addition to work on the court, Evans is a member of the national Student Athlete Advisory Committee and is active both locally and nationally.

Last year, Evans was chosen as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's representative on the NCAA Division II Student Athletic Advisory Council. He is the first East Stroudsburg representative to be chosen for this honor.
To be the national SAAC representative, Evans was selected from four nominees from the PSAC. The majority of his time on the NCAA SAAC is spent at conferences where he will have an active voice in issues concerning academics, missed class time, steroids, the tobacco policy, travel schedule, how to get involved in the community and other issues concerning intercollegiate athletics.

His selection to the NCAA SAAC was not an easy one. First, Evans was selected by the members of the men's basketball team as their representative to the ESU SAAC. Then, the East Stroudsburg council, comprised of at least one person per team, selected Evans to represent the men's sports in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The PSAC SAAC, with at least one member per school, then selected Evans to be one of four finalists. Finally, the NCAA chose Evans to represent the PSAC.

Part of the application process included an essay from Evans detailing his interests in intercollegiate athletics as well as his leadership and management background and his academic records.

Men's basketball players Danny Hargrove and Naveen Mohiuddin were also honored. Hargrove was a nominee for Senior Athlete of the Year and won the men's basketball MVP. Mohiuddin, also a senior, was chosen as the coaches award winner.
